DCSAA INDUCTS LAWRENCE MOTEN INTO DC HIGH SCHOOL HALL OF FAME

HALL OF FAME

The DC State Athletic Association proudly inducted former Archbishop Carroll High School standout Lawrence Moten into the DC High School Hall of Fame on Sunday night.

Moten is the only player ever to be named first-team All-Met as a junior and senior in both football and basketball. He went on to star on the basketball team at Syracuse University, where he set the school and Big East Conference career scoring records, earning the nickname “Poetry in Moten.”

Moten played in the NBA for the Vancouver Grizzlies and Washington Wizards and played professionally overseas before getting into coaching and working to help the next generation of student-athletes. He most recently worked at Digital Pioneers Academy, where he was the general manager for the school’s basketball teams.

Moten died this past September. He was 53.

“Lawrence Moten was a legend in the District of Columbia,” DCSAA Executive Director Kenny Owens said. “While he first made a name for himself on the football field and basketball court, he later established himself as a family leader and was dedicated to his community. The DCSAA is humbled to honor Lawrence Moten and remember his incredible career.”

About a dozen family members, including Moten’s wife Noelene and daughters Lawrencia and Leilani attended the DCSAA Basketball Championships Sunday night at George Washington University’s Smith Center, where Moten was recognized during a ceremony at halftime of the Class AA Boys Basketball championship game.

As a high school senior, Moten was a two-way standout on the football field, catching 55 passes for 10 touchdowns as a wide receiver and intercepting 13 passes from his safety position as he was named the All-Met Defensive Player of the Year and the Touchdown Club’s Defensive Player of the Year. That winter, on the basketball court, Moten averaged 28 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
